Innovating Orthotics with a Purpose Beyond Performance

At Formthotics, we prioritise sustainability because it is the right course of action, not simply a trend.

Just like feet connect us to the ground, our business is grounded in making meaningful progress for people and the planet. While we are not perfect, we are committed to making meaningful changes across all aspects of our business, from materials and manufacturing to conservation efforts.

Our Sustainability Journey

Progress, Not Perfection

  • Transition to Plant-Based Materials

In 2023, we made a significant step in transitioning to plant-based materials, reducing our reliance on fossil-fuel-derived materials. This change helps us lower our environmental impact while maintaining the same performance, comfort, and durability that Formthotics is known for.

  • Certified as a Climate Positive Business

We began our sustainability journey in 2022 by partnering with Toitū Envirocare to become Climate Positive certified. We are proud to be one of only a handful of companies in New Zealand with this certification. Achieving this status means that we offset 125% of our emissions and engage with every part of our value chain. But it doesn’t stop there—we continue to push forward, setting science-based targets that align with global climate goals.

  • Packaging: Working Toward Recycled Materials

We know sustainability doesn’t end with product design. That’s why we’re working toward incorporating recycled materials into our packaging. It’s another piece of the puzzle in our mission to reduce waste and make every aspect of our business more environmentally responsible.

Supporting Conservation Efforts in New Zealand

Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond orthotics. We believe that contributing to the preservation of New Zealand’s native species is part of our responsibility as a local business. That’s why we work alongside the Department of Conservation (DOC) and the Leslie Hutchins Conservation Foundation, supporting efforts to protect endangered birds like the Rock Wren and Kea.

What were the outcomes?

Even though Rock Wren and Kea populations on Resolution Island haven’t yet reached what we’d hoped to see, we know that every piece of data contributes to the bigger picture. It’s an important step toward reviving these incredible species, full of personality and deeply connected to our history and whenua.

We are grateful to be part of DOC’s important mahi (work) and will continue contributing where we can to protect our native birds for future generations. Because every step, however small, matters in the journey toward a sustainable future for Aotearoa (New Zealand).
